Day 9 - Forbidden City/Tiananmen Square

After arriving in Beijing around 8:30am (on Sunday) we road to the hotel, cleaned up, took a short nap before heading into the city.  We were both struck by the smog.  To the naive eye the air appeared foggy, when in reality it was just pollution.  We spent the afternoon in Tiananmen Square and the Forbidden City along with about a half a million other people who had the same thing in mind.

While walking through the Forbidden City we were approached by a group of chinese tourist who wanted their pictures taken with us.  We aren't sure who they thought we were; I think they just saw the coolest couple ever and wanted a picture (or maybe it was just because we were Americans).

We were unsure of this monument at the time.  We now know it's the Monument to the People's Hero.
